Our journey

Here are some of our key milestones. As you’ll see, we have a proud history – but we’re even more excited about the future.

1981–present

1981

Homebase opens its doors for the first time

The very first Homebase opens in Croydon. A joint venture between Sainsbury’s and a Belgian retailer, it brings a supermarket style layout to the DIY market.

1995

Homebase blooms overnight

Homebase buys Texas Homecare. Overnight, Homebase triples in size and establishes itself as a major player in the home improvement market.

2002

Part of something bigger

Homebase is acquired by GUS plc, which also owns Argos. The two retailers later break away to form Home Retail Group.

A whole new chapter begins

2016 and beyond

In February 2016 Homebase was acquired by Bunnings, the leading retailer of home improvement and outdoor living products in Australia and New Zealand. This starts a whole new chapter for us and makes it an exciting time to join a company with big changes ahead.
